These are 8-week, hands on workshops. We will blend music study and creation in a learning experience that is part course and part workshop, led by music theorist, Dr. Malia Jade Roberson (author, Music Theory Staff Paper (2019) and Visualize Keyboard Scales & Modes (2020), Hal Leonard).
This course is for musicians that want to accelerate their progress in writing and arranging music and work best in a structured environment with gentle and encouraging accountability. Workshops are for musicians with some experience--those that are writing music already and need extra support and theory skills to take their music to the next level. Students are grouped as beginning, intermediate, and advanced.
Group study is more economical than individual study!
If you are a MUSIC TEACHER, and you know that your students need more work on reading music notation, reviewing the Circle of 5ths, diatonic and chromatic techniques, let Dr. Malia do the heavy lifting of working with your students in a structured format with feedback on written exercises while you focus on repertoire and technique. Music theory provides students with a holistic music education and improves musicianship in all areas.
Students: You will shape the music theory topics in this workshop. You will come out of this workshop with at least one completed piece of music, or advance on multiple pieces of music. This is a masterclass style setting with community support and continued engagement after the workshop ends.

This is not a self-study asynchronous course. It is a weekly structured workshop with Zoom meeting times (you can watch the replays if you can't make a live workshop session).
If you are employed as music educator or performer, you may consider asking your institution for tuition support as this would be considered professional musical training.
Apps and Tools
We will be using Zoom, Slack, and Canvas. You will need music staff paper, printer, pencil. You can go paperless with an ipad or tablet device (recommended), and apple pencil or stylus. There will be a large quantity of PDFs. Sibelius or Finale recommended to practice using a music notation program, but MuseScore will do.
What to Expect
You can expect to finish at least one piece of music, or advance in multiple pieces of music in progress.
You can expect to meet new musicians, network, give and get support from each other throughout this process. We will have strong communication in a masterclass style setting
